Camera across America #4 Monument Valley

Monument Valley

As young students we were hooked on cowboy movies,  The Magnificent Seven, The Good The Bad & The Ugly, Pale Rider, True Grit, Chisum, and the extremely violent Wild Bunch starring William Holden. So many of them featured scenery from Monument Valley, another natural wonder on Dr Cs list recorded here in colour this time.
Sandstone buttes, rock pinnacles and shifting red sands are the main geological features which have shaped our perception of every Western movie ever made. However this is also home to the Navajo Nation and the largest Native American reservation in the US. Although they lost almost everything in the 1800s there are now around 300,000 Navajo mostly working as shepherds and farmers, though there are many craftspeople selling their wares in roadside stalls and trading posts.

  1. The wonders of this great land of ours…that we have the freedom to sit in awe and behold this beauty…we are lucky. 🙂

Thank you for sharing these epic images. You captured them beautifully.

  2. Surely one of the best film locations ever. So which is your favourite western?
